Once upon a time I made a blog about video games. And this is what's left of it (mostly tweets).

4 March

Finished my last AC:Origins tour and I want more. I want to spend more time in this world and I want all the game types. Egyptian Cart Simulator. Nile Farming Simulator. Playerunknown`s Primitive Battlegrounds. Far Cry and Destiny are done, but I want all the others.

I was doing so well and I died on a very silly mistake

My MacBook’s been in the shop for three days and that’s what it took for me to finally get a real start on my first Unity project. As you can see I’m doing something that’s never ever been done before.

6 March

Well this is pretty crazy (of the good kind)

There are valid business reasons not to include Origins in that list, but why no Syndicate?

How on earth is the Music category in the Steam library such an insane mess? How is it allowed to exist in that state?

7 March

How… many ways can there be to resolve an expired certificate 😵

I’ve tried several times and I still don’t understand why people like Hollow Knight. I hate the movement, and it’s impossible to visualize my weapon range. What am I missing? (Other than “it’s pretty” and “the world,” that I’m not in a position to enjoy.)

@unormal:

I really love the extremely awesome “hostage demand” genre of negative steam reviews.

Skyrim VR is coming to PC and Oculus Rift in three weeks 😱

It’s gonna be kinda shit and I’ll quickly be tired of it but I can’t possibly not try it, can I — nor can almost anyone else.

@unity3d:

With @GoogleMapsAPI, features like buildings, streets and parks can now be GameObjects in Unity. We can’t wait to see what you create! [on.unity.com] #madewithunity

I don’t think I’ve ever been #26 of any game before. Of course that says more about Six Match failing to find the audience it deserves than about my skill.

@jfwong:

Mark Rosewater, head of R&D at Wizards of the Coast and one of the best game designers of all time, is truly a role model & steward of gaming.

He gets hundreds of messages far worse than this, but always replies with class and dignity. Thank you Mark.

Looking at the Magic Leap SDK would be silly when there’s already so much I can do with the hardware I actually own. Looking at the Magic Leap SDK would be silly when there’s already so much I can do with the hardware I actually own. Looking at the Magic Leap SDK would be silly w

Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun was on my wishlist and it was a nice surprise to get it for free with Amazon Prime via Twitch. I was waiting for a sale because I’m not patient enough to get my money’s worth of a tactics game, but it is very good and I’m enjoying it so far.

Also played DubWars which is a very fun concept: a twin-stick space shooter where you don’t control your weapons — they’re synced with the music. I’m not good (or, again, patient) enough to even finish the first stage but I really like the idea.

There’s no way I’m gonna spend my time playing PUBG on a small phone screen (if anything it’s pushing me that much more toward buying the PC version) but damn it’s crazy you can play a full-featured game like this on mobile

And I lost because of an accidental swipe 😡 #sixmatch

On the one hand, Horizon Zero Dawn is at 20€ on PSN… on the other, my controller has stopped working with the console but connects to the computer, which makes me worry that the PS4’s wireless is dead and I’m gonna have bigger problems than HZD’s price.

@benz145:

Why do VR controllers insist on putting icons on their buttons instead of giving each button a unique tactile shape? It’s almost impossible to tell the user “press the A button”, but would be really easy to tell them “press the button that feels like this icon looks.”

The article mentions several times “true 6DOF” and it’s still unclear to me whether the Oculus Go uses accelerometers to approximate small head movements or you’re completely locked in place, which I expect would quickly make me sick

@alexqgb:

In light of what they’ve done with Go, and assuming Project Santa Cruz runs on an Snapdragon 845, the standalone Rift should be more than capable of ending consumer-level PC VR. From that point on, I suspect PCs will be for enterprise / LBE / pro-authoring apps only.

Google’s light fields of the space shuttle at the Smithsonian are incredible — it’s weird to see that much detail and texture in a VR headset. But at the same time it’s terribly frustrating that you can’t actually move.

23 March

Right now Google’s rig takes thirty seconds to produce a shot but I wonder if their rumored acquisition of Lytro would enable them to make light fields in Street View. Feels like that’s got to be the goal?

@heyadam:

We built an AR @Mapbox experience with @metaglasses. The optics are 👌.

@radiatoryang:

Ingold argues “player freedom” in single player story games follows a sort of axis / spectrum, from “where do I go now” to “yikes what have I done” (systemic games making your plans go wrong) #GDC18

25 March

I did not realize HashtagWarGames was playable for free

I hate interactive fiction where the result of player choice doesn’t follow mechanically from the character’s actions so this was basically tailor-made for me 😒

I wish I had the strength (or… common sense) to give up on an open-world game before it becomes a chore to clean out the last side-quest icons. Worth noting though, it took me sixty hours to reach that point in AC:Origins.

26 March

@haydencd:

“Far Cry 5’s story is bad. 9/10” Every fucking review today.

27 March

I have no interest in the trials so I guess that’s that for Bayek, unless the next DLC gets rave reviews

This is freaking brilliant. Saccade-driven redirected walking in #VR. Eliciting eye movements then exploiting saccadic suppression to hide subtle camera shifts. #psychology

Also I’m very glad that failing miserably doesn’t kick you out of the song.

Coming from AC:Origins (and in easy mode, too) I wasn’t prepared for how scary the early encounters in Horizon Zero Dawn would be.

31 March

@kirkhamilton:

I was glad Far Cry 5 came out as I was working on this article - it’s a fun game, and also one that perfectly encapsulates how so many modern video games relate to guns.

@benz145:

Wait a minute… @ThumperGame

You did not defeat me, crazy saturday theme!
